Top Georgia GOP money men from campaigns past have fallen in with presumptive nominee Sen. John McCain and are throwing a gala fundraiser in Savannah next Monday, the 19th of May. Though donors are being asked to contribute a minimum of $23,000 per couple for a private pow wow with the Senator, don't expect any of that cash to stay in Georgia. Hidden in the fine print of the invitation, courtesty of the Political Insider is the following:
"For individuals, the first $2,300 to JM 2008, the next $2,300 to the Compliance Fund, the next $28,500 to the RNC, and the balance of up to $37,000 will be divided evenly between the Colorado, Minnesota, New Mexico and Wisconsin parties' federal accounts."
Similar disclaimers are present for couples and PAC donations. Democratic fundraisers in Georgia have complained for years that Presidential candidates and the national party harvest contributions from states like Georgia only to be shipped elsewhere. Because Georgia has not been in play, Republicans have likely done the same thing, though in the past donors have at least gone along without complaining publicly. It remains to be seen whether McCain's explicit acknowledgement of his campaign's role as somewhat of a Presidential Western Union will raise any feathers with Georgia's GOP donors.
